21st Century Candles
These machines seem to be in all the Spanish churches. They only take coins - presumably because the metal contact trips a switch. As you put the coin in, a new candle flickers and comes on. I don't know whether the primary reason for them is fire safety or cost. All the ones I've seen ask for either 10 or 20 cents, whereas the going rate for a candle in French churches usually starts at 50 cents and can be a euro or more.
