When Cordoba fell to the Christians, they decided to turn the mosque into the cathedral. Initially, the king gave permission for the destruction of the mosque in any way the builders wished, because he had not seen it. However, when he visited the city and saw what a splendid building it was, he ordered that the construction of the church must preserve the existing building.
